What was the overriding “theme” or direction you tried to capture with Cable?
Brad Lindsay
Animator
Cable: he’s from the future. What more of a theme do you need? In all seriousness, though, Cable’s just a tough guy who happens to be a cyborg. Like many of the other characters, it was a matter of nailing down his personality – since we had his voice acting recorded, we took a small amount of influence from that. We also wanted to make good use of his gun and his arm in his animations to really sell the power and might that Cable has.
Adam Olshan
Lead Animator
Cable is such an interesting and powerful character, with super strength, telekinetic and telepathic powers. Ultimately, we wanted to differentiate him from other telekinesis- or energy-based characters. We tried to keep the phrase ”tech soldier” in mind when creating Cable; it was important to remember that Cable is a well-trained soldier, and he has a big freaking gun. In animation, the team focused on his mass, making sure his movement conveyed solid weight and immense power in his move set.
For this week’s dev diary on our newly announced downloadable character, Psylocke, we’ve gotten the deadly duo of Steven Vanseth and Steve Nelson to help us out. Take it away, guys!
What was the overriding “theme” or direction you tried to capture with Psylocke?
Steve Vanseth
Animator
Psylocke is a fan favorite, and I wanted to make sure I stayed true to her character and captured the appeal of her character. This started in the basic traversal. I really wanted to give her a strong feminine attitude. As for her powers, we felt it was key to play up her martial arts abilities as much as possible and incorporate her ability to create “psi” weapons.
Here is an alternate costume for Psylocke, the second of five DLC characters.
Bryan Shutt – Art Director
Picking Psylocke’s alternate costume was tough because there were a lot of good choices. Some questions I was often asking myself were, “Does it look fun?” and “Does it stand out in a crowd?” Ultimately most people on the project were drawn to her House of M costume. It had a kind of formal appeal to it but without the constraints of a standard dress. Plus I knew that we could really get the dragon motif to pop and shine.
