What was the overriding “theme” or direction you tried to capture with Cable?

Cable: he’s from the future. What more of a theme do you need? In all seriousness, though, Cable’s just a tough guy who happens to be a cyborg. Like many of the other characters, it was a matter of nailing down his personality – since we had his voice acting recorded, we took a small amount of influence from that. We also wanted to make good use of his gun and his arm in his animations to really sell the power and might that Cable has.

Cable is such an interesting and powerful character, with super strength, telekinetic and telepathic powers. Ultimately, we wanted to differentiate him from other telekinesis- or energy-based characters. We tried to keep the phrase ”tech soldier” in mind when creating Cable; it was important to remember that Cable is a well-trained soldier, and he has a big freaking gun. In animation, the team focused on his mass, making sure his movement conveyed solid weight and immense power in his move set.

I really wanted the effects to support the idea that Cable is from the future. I tried to focus on the technologically advanced aspects of his character. For example, most of the left side of Cable’s body is cybernetic, so you’ll notice that when he attacks, his right arm leaves motion trails but his left arm forms a more powered up energy trail. One of our other FX artists, Jason Timmons, also made sure to get in his trademark glowing left eye.
What’s something you worked on that turned out particularly well?

His attacks had a lot of basis in using his gun and the futuristic tech on his body. The gun itself varies in its style of shots, grenades or beams, and that really helped add variety to his powers. Almost every move utilizes this “heavy weapon” theme, and in many respects Cable is the theme, since he’s got this tech spread throughout his body. He uses his arm paired with his internal tech to produce a big shockwave knockback when characters gang up on him, and he can use his gun to bust out rapid-fire plasma shots to take down the masses.

I really like how Cable’s weapon-based effects turned out as a whole. Again, with him being from the future, Cable’s gun should be capable of doing things that are not possible with today’s weapons. Today everyone walks around with all-in-one handheld devices. Well, wouldn’t it make sense for a soldier from the future to have one weapon that has the ability to function like multiple weapons? So that’s what we did. One second Cable’s gun has the speed and flexibility of a pistol and the next it has the destructive capabilities of a cannon.
Now that Cable’s almost done, what’s your favorite thing about him?

My favorite part of Cable—besides him being a time-traveling maniac—is that his attacks are pretty intense. From his area-of-effect ground-pound robot-arm slam attack to his gigantic particle-beam blast, Cable’s one of my favorite heroes that’s up for grabs.

Animation-wise, Cable’s traversal set is one of the strongest in the game. If I can mention two favorites (and I will), some of Cable’s beam FX really got the team excited. Early in Cable’s development, one of his gun blasts took everyone by surprise when we looked at it in the reviews – we replayed it far more times than was necessary to get constructive feedback (basically a moment of collective geeking out). Travis was able to further improve on that first “wow” moment we had, and the result is super cool.

I think one of my favorite things to see with Cable is his fusion with Spider-Man. Spidey lassos multiple enemies while Cable loads his gun and releases a massive energy blast. It rips the ground apart and destroys anything in its path.

Mmmm I would have too loved to have telekinesis in my powers with Cable, something like a big energy wave that threw back foes or a more powerful TK or telepathy attack than the ones from jean or sue because they can’t grab objects like jean in XML and sometimes they are a little weak in my opinion. But anyway ol’ Nate is my fav X-Men and the fact that he sided with Cap, another of my favorites, makes him better to me so I will download him no matter what :D

i know, he has like 3 gun attacks and the other is a ground slam with his robo-arm. i can do with the ground slam but 3 gun attacks? i wanted AT LEAST 1 TK attack. Im still gonna get him though seeing as he still looks like he’s gonna rock. Def my fav

This is pretty awesome. He’s definitely my favorite character in the game; I don’t even need to see him in action. I’d also be looking forward to a Cable, Deadpool, Cage, Iron Fist team. I hope they’re making one.

The preview on Ign of him was a bit negative, but they also only had access to 2 of his moves. His “Particle Stream” sounds like it could be pretty devastating. Personally I was hoping they would add his Hyper Viper Beam from Marvel Vs. Capcom 2. I’m just happy he’s in though.

This is the most awesome news that I have ever heard in my life. I can’t wait to play as him whenever I am able to play the 360 version with my best friend JD or when I get the game myself. I sure hope his powers and attacks are cool. It also would be nice to see him and Deadpool interact. All in all, this is so great and awesome. Heck, I knew the 360 and PS3 would get better stuff than PS2 owners. Anyways, CABLE RULES!!!!

First he is not a cyborg he was infected with a techno organic virus wich he keeps in check with his powers. The only thing he can do with it is sometimes bend it to his will. His guns are futuristic not his body.
Atlest I can understand how you guy’s butchered him now. He was one of the guy’s I was looking forward to most even as a NPC but he was such a let down. Worse Design in the game I would rather have someone else then this version of him.
Your argument of having someone diffrent is kind of weak when he well have a blast that does area damage. Grenades like goblin and deadpool. A laser attack.
When each one could have been diffrent. His Psi-Tar him bodysliding and when his energy was low the TK Virus starting to go out of control would have been keeping with who he is

I really hoped that they would at least been nice to cable also… Seriously he hasn’t had uber rigged powers since he beaten up the silver surfer! Now in every comic he realies on guns! He only used his powers in Messiah War and they were gone for good after that.

Yes, he is a cyborg: the techno organic virus transformed the left side of his body into machinery. His left arm is organic metal, his left eye is now cybernetic, the left half of his skeleton and nervous system is essentially like a computer network that lets him hack into machinery.

First of all, by this time in the comics, Cable had lost most of his mutant abilities, and what was left was being used to fight the virus in his body. And yes, some of his body was converted to machine. And his right eye is the scarred one, the left one glows. Don’t believe me, pick up a Cable comic. They got it right for the game.
But I agree, more TK powers would have been cool, though Cable does tend to have some huge guns most of the time, so that works too.

For anyone who doesn’t believe you, just direct them to either Marvel’s website or the Marvel wiki site; it’s what I’ve been doing.
I do agree Cable should’ve received some TK/TP powers to balance his guns, but I remember him being more of the shooter type most of the time.
I do like his gun mechanic: one minute it can be a pistol, the next it’s lobbing grenades at people.

Despite the nay-sayers griping, I think Cable turned out really well! I am looking forward to playing him in the game now! I admit I was skeptical at first, but I have to say..slowly but surely VV is winning back my respect and praise. Carnage was a bit of a stumble, but last week’s Psylocke reveal and now the Cable info this week..its turning around and is starting to look pretty damn good!

The dev mentions his powers include telekinesis, but i don’t think they gave him any. BUT, whatever, i love cable, he is the ‘perfect mutant’ the son of the hot orgasm inspiring phoenix, and the most badass xman around. CABLE IS A BEAST! Thank you devs...although not perfect...he will suffice

OMG. I think I just exploded in my pants. I just finished the best paper I ever wrote. Comic books as a legitimate art form and storytelling medium. 10 pages of freaking amazing. To me anyway. Then I hop on my homepage, the MUA 2 site, and see the Cable article posted. Cable was the one I think I wanted most from the beginning. I am so blown away and excited. I can’t wait. Did anyone read the review on IGN? The person that reviewed Cable said he really wasn’t all that impressive but that he used him relatively early in the game (only had 2 powers and lower attributes).

Yes he is. In one storyline, i think Messiah war, he used his powers and they cut out. The remainder is fighting the techno organic virus from making him a robot. The virus infected the left half of his body, essentially making him a cyborg.

I’ve been waiting for a chance to play a game with Deadpool and Cable teamed since the previous games if you include X-Men Legends II. It looks to me like they did a fine job as far as my knowledge of Cable goes. However, now this has me thinking. In the game, Cable was most decidedly on the Anti-Reg side. So, even if downloaded, would that mean he’s a Anti-Reg only character? Also, would this then mean we’ll get his Pro-Reg counter part, Bishop? Or maybe another strictly Pro-Reg character since Bishop would make three DLC X-Men? Can hardly wait to find out.

Was wrong about the eye and if they have made it so he can use the tk virus a plus instead of a negative. I think that would be the gayest thing ever. I haven’t followed cable or many comics in about 12 years. Got back into Green Lantern. Don’t follow the X-men so many books with diffrent plots you don’t even know what’s going on. Do have the complete series to Cable.
All I was saying is that it’s the same movies that everyone else has in this game except tied to his gun and the one where he uses his cybernetics as a pulse doesn’t even fit with him. I am saying that they did a cookie cutter job with him but hey If you like good for you. I was given my opion on who he should be. Not what he was changed into so Marvel could put a new spin on him to make more money.

Wow… Wow… my little brother could have been more creative at the age of 6 than that. Come on guys, if you want him to be a futuristic bada**, then do that. If you didn’t want to make him super over-powered, that’s cool too. But I think there are better ways to go about it than “Well, he has this gun… so let’s make him use that a whole lot!”
I just pray we get some patching that adds to our move repertoire and feelings of super-power. Maybe even some extra levels (both character levels and missions). That’d be DLC I’d definitely buy.

1. I said this to no one in particular. All I read was the article, no one’s posts. If I was calling you out, I would have referenced you.
2. Back off, dude. No need for vulgarity and slander.
3. Ummm… if you have played many video games/read some books/seen some movies/bought comics/etc in the last.... 30+ years(?), you know that the question of “The Future” has been a focal point of all these for a long time. Thus, there’s a wide array of opinions and creativity in what people believe the future will hold.
And when The Jetsons shows a more vibrant future than a Marvel-endorsed game, that’s where I have my issue. When I know the smallest iota of a character’s power, and their game-incarnation isn’t even a sliver of *that*… Well, then I start asking questions to the creators and developers. Sorry, maybe I just hold people to a higher standard, and wish to let them know that I appreciate what they’ve done, but want to push them in a direction to better themselves and the products I’m buying. This whole Video Gaming field is what I hope to make my life’s work in the next few years, so I like to compare ideas with those already in the market.
Now let’s be adults and be willing to talk multiple sides of an issue, eh? Rather than jumping to the “STFU I HATEZ U AND UR OPINION!!!”
