Dev Q&A: Katie Orcutt, Junior Animator “I Make Deadpool flip out and kill people.”
So what’s your job, basically?
I’m an animator working on the “Heroes” team – creating and designing moves for all the playable characters in the game.
What are you working on today?
Today, I’m polishing up some of Spider-Man’s combat animations. Specifically his light 1, 2, and 3 attack combos. I’m trying to make him feel more acrobatic and bouncy. We get a lot of feedback on how each character is supposed to look and feel. Our lead might say, “I think Wolverine needs to feel more powerful, so when he wigs out he looks like a rabid mongoose about to attack an elephant.” As an animator it’s your job to interpret that and adjust the keys accordingly ("keys" is our shorthand for “key frames,” which dictate the position of a character at any given time).
What’s your favorite thing that you’ve worked on?
One of my favorite characters I worked on was Mr. Fantastic. His power set was challenging to animate – he has a really complex rig. He can move in any direction, so his character model’s “bone” structure (we call it a “rig”) has to accommodate that. Since his power is stretching, we really tried to push the limit on what kind of moves we could do with him. In the end, the hard work paid off – I think Mr. Fantastic is one of the more fun characters to play in the game.
Deadpool is another character that was great to work on. His ninja-like fighting style gave us some really creative ideas – if you hold down the B button + Right Trigger, he starts running around slashing people in a continuous rage. The best part is when you run towards a wall…
What’s the best part of the job?
It’s pretty awesome animating the characters you’ve grown up with – Spider-Man, Wolverine, Hulk. Making them come to life and having the ability to play them in the game is so exciting!
Worst part?
Too much spandex… One can only take looking at grown men in spandex for so long.

Yeah, looks very powerful, however I fear this indicates lack of creative thinking when it came to creating Storm’s four powers- as it looks fairly similar to the lightning strike move she had in XML, XML2 and MUA.

It looks similar, but I can see her in a position as if she was throwing the lightning bolt. I think we should actually play through the game and or wait for more info before making a final judgment, just my opinion however.

The powers will probably look similar since there’s only so many powers that each character has that will translate well to a game. Lightning happens to be one of those powers for Storm.

I don’t know. I think outside of the confirmed characters most of the people in the trailer will be NPCs or bosses. Maybe a few (Cables) will be unlockable playable but I don’t think they’d spoil a reveal before they reveal them. (Outside of the whole GG and Venom sitch)

Hey did you guys see War Machine in the trailer or was that my imagination, if so I am even more psyched for the game. Loved Gobby and Venom, and the game looks so sweet! Deadpool looked amazing and I don’t even like his character but I wanted to pick up my controller and do that spin, jump, machine gun move that was awesome!

Well since I love IM so much I love me some Rhodey and War Machine so I hope he is an unlockable character as I don’t think it would be fair to have IM and War Machine both in the 24 player roster as they are going to play somewhat similarly. But if I can play as War Machine too, very cool.

I’m more interested in seeing what other moves we get. Lightning is a given and we know how that’ll work but how about some hail, snow, or ice? If Bobbi isn’t in this game, like it doesn’t seem he will be, it opens the door for Storm to use more ice attacks.

Yeah, about that, Dr. T. Please get on the Devs and the Mods to help us ACTUALLY hear a bit more on 1-number of levels, 2-number of Boss battles, 3-Number of minibosses, 4-number of NPCs in game. When I worked in CRPG design as an art director, my sketches were given to the 3D artist to make 3D models out of them, which were then given to the animators. Sometimes the head of production would call me to give my input on how the final animations looked, but not always, and my input at that stage was not considered authoritative. We worked no closer than that, even though we all sat three cubicles away from each other. But perhaps that was a flaw of OUR studio; perhaps they work more interactively elsewhere.
