Furious Fists of Iron coming to MUA2 The latest character to be introduced to Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 is Iron Fist. Read on to find out what the team at Vicarious Visions think about the new addition.
Alex Kerr (Narrative Designer)
We’re really excited to get Iron Fist, AKA Danny Rand, into the Marvel: Ultimate Alliance series for the first time. His unique Chi powers raise him above the level of a standard brawler, so he adds a unique flavor to any team he's placed on. We drew heavily from The Immortal Iron Fist series (2006-present) for his background and power set.
For those of you unfamiliar with the comics, Iron Fist isn't just a guy who knows Kung-Fu (no offense, Shang-Chi fans). "Iron Fist" is actually the title of a mystical power source wielded by Danny Rand, the latest in a long line of mortals who have used it to protect the Earth. Combined with his years of training in myriad martial arts, the power of the "Iron Fist" makes Rand a force to be reckoned with.
Nick Niebling (Animator)
I animated the majority of Iron Fist’s movements, including his combat set (punches, kicks, blocks) traversal set (walk, run, jump, double jump) and character-specific powers. Being a master of the martial arts, Iron fist gave me the great opportunity to really make a fun combat set that flowed really well from move to move. That said, he had his own set of challenges, mostly dealing with animating cloth: bits of fabric from his head band and waist belt would often get tangled. His powers took a lot of effort as well; I worked closely with our lead Powers designer, Brandon Van Slyke, forming ideas of what would work best, reworking some movies, starting over on others. For his “Chi” effects, we used a lot of comic reference to get the feel just right. In the end, I feel we ended with a great set of powers that are fun to play, but also unique.
Justin Heisler (Fusion Designer)
We wanted Iron Fist to have his own theme and stick out from other characters. His powers and animations were strongly influenced by his martial arts fighting style, and for his powers we focused on moves emphasizing his Chi abilities. This carried through to his Fusion moves: in many of his moves, he leaves mystic symbols after major impacts, and even sometimes when he’s moving at accelerated speeds.
The other major theme for his Fusions was Iron Fist’s fighting prowess, turning him into a deadly force for hand-to-hand destruction. The effects artists did a great job making effects for all his moves making him feel powerful, as well as visually appealing.
Nick Niebling
While working on Iron Fist there was only one thing going through my mind. "I have to make him better then Bruce Lee."
When I was told to animate Iron Fist I started searching all the different types of martial arts. Kung fu, karate, Tai Chi, Jeet Kune Do, boxing... Everything. I wanted him to have a good mix of everything, like he was a master of it all.
I'm excited for players to see his combat set. It's unique to him. Iron Fist doesn't just go in “fist swinging;” despite the name, he’s not all punches. He kicks, he spins jumps. It's a nice mix and you can get some really nice looking combos with him.

Now, some of the more observant Marvel fans may be saying "Waaait a minute. While Civil War was going on, Iron Fist was wearing a certain lawyer's red outfit." You're right, and this is where we depart from the canon a bit: In Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2, both Daredevil and Iron Fist are participating in the Civil War.
As we've mentioned before, our game is sort of a "What If?" take on the Marvel Civil War. We’re including a lot of fan-favorite characters with their classic identities, so we wanted Matt Murdock as Daredevil. But we didn’t want to leave Danny out of the picture – so we decided to bring in both characters and use them to their full potential. Iron Fist can make full use of his Chi abilities and Daredevil can rely on his superhuman senses in combat. The chance to let players really cut loose with both characters made this decision a no-brainer. With Marvel's blessing, we started work on getting both characters in for all-out melee mayhem.
Without spoiling too much, Iron Fist has an interesting place in the narrative of Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2. He knows how crucial secrecy is for heroes like Daredevil. And, like his former partner Luke Cage, he knows how important it is for heroes to work close to the streets without the government getting in the way. While he doesn't take center stage very often, the choices players make will determine exactly what role he'll play in their story.
Aside from his role in the main storyline, Iron Fist's lines (particularly the in-game combat lines, or "quips") presented an interesting challenge. In the comics, Danny Rand is a thoroughly modern young man with a wicked sense of humor. However, he is also a disciplined martial artist, and the bearer of a mystical power which has been passed down through the centuries. His quips had to precisely reflect these disparate personality facets while still remaining true to the game as a whole. Iron Fist's quips pay homage to his history and personality, yet still feel natural and fun.
Overall, we couldn't be more pleased with how he's turning out, and we think he'll be a popular addition to the Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 roster.

I could not possibly be more pleased to be right about this reveal! I was almost positive it was going to be Iron Fist...I only had the slightest doubt. My other guess was Cable. It was a majority for Iron Fist though....like 90%!!

I really liked the look of Iron Fist and his moves and he is better than Cable. I am looking forward to playing Iron Fist as I am into martial arts as well, although I cannot as of yet channle my chi to make the iron fist.

It give you high hopes that all the playable characters will have as much work put in to make them very unique when playing them. In MUA some of the characters played too similarly. In MUA 2 I want a unique experience with each character I play and I think that is what we are going to get.

At the time I initially read this, all I knew about Iron Fist was that he was a martial arts master who befriended one of my top 3 favorite heroes, Luke Cage. I did alot of reading up and I’d love to add him to my team along with Cage :D

Iron Fist is possibly my favorite character during the Marvel Civil War. The way he stepped up to help Daredevil and he’s got the best line in the whole saga when he gets arrested, and sees Iron Man standing there at the gateway of the prison. He flips him a coin from when the Avengers had their “family” poker night. “Sleep well, Judas.”

Danny Rand and Wade Wilson are two completely different characters. Wade uses guns and swords and jank and talks nonsense, an insane merc if you will.
Danny use the chi of shou’loa the undying and some intense martial arts skills to whoop some bootay, he is also kind of a space keydet.
Basically saying that IF and DP are going to be the same is like saying that Iron Man and Ms.Marvel are going to be the same.

Such a terrible choice of character. It makes me wonder if Marvel charges more for the licensing agreement if a developer chooses to use popular and decent characters as opposed to second string douche bags that look like Kato. The original game gave us Spider Woman, Moon Knight, Ms Marvel and Cage - over characters like Hulk, Cyclops, various other popular X-men, Cable, Punisher etc…

Even though it’s strange, roster can’t be just all-star. It’s great to have Hulk, Spider-Man, Iron Man and Wolverine on a same team, but it gets old eventually. No, you have to include fan-favourites in roster too. B-list characters are a big part of Marvel Universe too. Characters like Iron Fist really deserve to be here.

I don’t know, ‘Iron Fist’ just doesn’t gel too well with my vision of the Ultimate universe.
What I love about the Ultimate U, is that marvel actually got some decent British writers on board, like Grant Morrison and Mark Millar, who promptly worked their revisionist genius and injected a liberal dose of political intrigue and realism along with an equal serving of humour. (No offence to Bendis, he’s great too!)
Humour that was largely directed at popping left over baggage from the silver age as well as some more modern clichés that originated in that horrendous period in the nineties, where the artwork got ‘cool’ but the writing was diabolical.
It strikes me that in the Ultimates Universe, pretty much every hero’s power base can be explained as either a mutation, or as a direct or indirect result of experiments with the super soldier serum. To allow such a poorly defined and uninteresting character as Iron Fist to break the mold seems a little lame.
OK I’ll admit it, I just don’t like Iron Fist; I think his name is stupid and his outfit is ridiculous, as is the basis for his powers. He has the feel of a silver age character who has been thrust into a stylish and savvy world of contemporary issues and threats.
Equally ridiculous is Fantomex, however he is a product of pure, unadulterated post-modern revisionism - and I’ll champion any character who one day vomited out a flying saucer that becomes an external nervous system and has him run aruond like a GI-Joe outfitted, Matrix extra having some kind of psychedelic episode.
Fantomex’s powers aren’t necessarily even ‘real’ per-se; his real power is convincing everyone (even himself?) that they are in fact real; like some kind of hyper powered Gnostic lunatic who writes his own fate and causes a significant amount of reality bleed in the process.
“That’s retarded!” I hear you cry. Yes, yes it is - but it’s a special kind of self aware, self referential retardation that a literature snob like me can appreciate.
If I am to change my mind on Iron Fist then the character needs to be revised somewhat; I don’t know, maybe Tony Stark is browsing the web one day and finds an incriminating video featuring Danny Rand and Piotr Rasputin… “What Goes on Behind the Iron Curtain?”
“Iron Fisting” of course…
Lmao, now there’s some humorous revisionism I can get behind (eewww, poor choice of words I know).
At the very least some fun needs to be poked at the fact that this lame character was penned in the seventies due to a Bruce Lee inspired martial arts fad.
I’d settle for a humiliating smack down from a hero with real chops, followed by the line “What, you think you’re Bruce Lee or something?”

The story is Civil War-based, so the Ultimate universe isn’t even relevant here...except maybe for costumes. I personally like Iron Fist, but hey, to each his own, right?

You know, no sooner did I start reading Iron Fist did the cancel it. Actually I started reading it around the time when the completed the Seven Capital Cities, and now they are canceling it next month.
But regardless, it will be cool to play Danny Rand or maybe Orson Randall. Danny is probably my favorite character in the Marvel universe, yes even more so than Tony Stark (he’s pretty close though), its just sad that they are canceling his series just in time for this game.

i love iron fist and guys guess what!!! at gamespot they have a gameplay trailer of a level and they have 2 release dates september the 8th or september te 30th and juggernaut is only available if you put on a pre order from gamespot and there are 24 characters and in total 276 fusions! in the clip it sowed you the fusion songbird and juggernaut!

Where is DarkHawk? Ghost Rider, John Blaze, Morbius, Blade. Cloak and Dagger would of been really cool to use. She Hulk, Lizard, Carnage, Scream, Blackcat, Bishop, Cable, Tigra, Hawkeye??? These are all people i like and would like to use in the game. Or even like the villians, I like Venom and Juggernaut, I would of liked to seen more. And I know I will be one of the people buying most of the add on charactors. Just hopefully they dont pull a MK vs DC saying they are going to do add ons and never do any.

oh, but CWO (civil war online) is just to play here, and, to be honest, u’re not missing much.
The REAL game will have nothing like CWO, except the characters.
And in the real game, I think the extra guy actually is DareDevil, Iron Fist at least has powers… COOL powers.

Love that he’s in, but after reflecting on it, I wish you had not have added the huge chest protector. Not only was it never really worn by the character, but it looks too much like a catchers chest guard. Daredevil is just as vulnerable and you did not mess with his costume/look.
