So what was the core concept for Carnage?

Just to be as mean, savage, and up-close-and-personal as possible. All his attacks are really nasty. Carnage is out to hurt people, and he doesn’t care about collateral damage along the way.
We carried this mentality throughout all aspects of his design. One of my favorite powers, Symbiote Surprise, causes dozens of jagged spikes to shoot out from Carnage’s body. It’s an unexpected power, something an enemy probably isn’t prepared for, but also looks really nasty and painful for anyone caught in it. We also set up his abilities so players are rewarded for just tearing into foes one after another – we really wanted to play up the idea of a killing machine that simply did not stop.

Carnage was a lot of fun to do because we had a bit more freedom to take him out of the standard “upright bipedal” character. I worked mainly on his powers and traversal animations, and the main goal was to make him insanely vicious… someone you don’t want to mess with. We gave him this feral, animalistic stance, going with a largely four-legged approach, to get this sense that you really weren’t dealing with another human here. We had several revisions of his traversal in particular, until we felt like it was right.
Regarding his powers, they were a lot of fun too. His advancing attack and his ax slash were probably my two favorites. He’s really savage and strong, and I tried to play that up as much as I could. We really wanted to make him fun to play, as well as to look at.

We really wanted to make sure we didn’t make another Spider-Man or another Venom. It was really important that we make Carnage as unique as possible, especially in the way that he moved and the way that he attacked.
We used the word “vicious” a lot when talking about how he should look. “Crazy” too, because of the background of who he is and what he is. I worked mostly on his basic melee combat. That’s when we really pay attention to how we can differentiate that character. Spider-Man needs to be agile & springy. Venom was more of a bruiser, like a huge jungle cat who attacks with lethal clawed swipes. For Carnage, we wanted him to feel as quick as Spider-Man, but as dangerous as Venom (or worse). We ended up with a very “slashy” character. Carnage is like a lunatic knife fighter: cutting people up quickly and messily, without much concern for how he looks doing it.
In addition, we made sure to play up his symbiote’s ability to change shape. We have a lot of moves featuring his signature ax, and in a few moves we scale up his head and overextend his jaw. It really helps sell the idea that this isn’t a guy with claws – it’s an inhuman monster who’s going to eat you alive.
Were there any special difficulties when making this character?

Oddly enough, no. At this point, we’ve worked out so many different kinks in the character pipeline, we didn’t really have any technical problems.

We had a little bit of a challenge figuring out how to make the ax geometry blend in seamlessly, as well as things like his head scaling. But after trial and error, that all worked out beautifully.

We knew that visually he was going to be one of the more challenging characters because of his alien suit (which is constantly moving). We needed to do something that was a lot more dynamic and responsive, as opposed to something with a simple looped animation. We went through a lot of trial-and-error and eventually came up with a clever way to pull that off.
We ended up using what’s called a trail primitive: basically a series of geometry “ribbons” which follow him around and trail his motion, but also have some “life” of their own. A lot of times in games you’ll see “streaks” when a character punches. This is a similar situation, but we kept these visible during all phases of movement and gave them some organic motion of their own in addition to being influenced by Carnage’s movement. This helped give it that sense of a living thing rather than just another costume. It really helps set him apart, and it looks great!

Huge Spider-Man fan here, I’ve seriously read well over 750 (shoot, probably closer to 800+ by now!) issues of my favorite wall crawler and I couldn’t be more disappointed in this choice. Seriously… this guy is easily the most overrated villain every.
He is obviously just a cheap ripoff of The Joker with a few additional powers, he has no place in the Marvel U. Anarchistic villains could be cool, but not in these pages, they just don’t fit. He’s dead for a reason.
What ever happened to the “Civil War” story line, it really pisses me off that it just became a gimmick in this game rather then a story line.

If you paid attention you’d know that this game isn’t just the “Civil War” storyline which in and of itself was poorly written trash in comics. It’s only 1/3 of the game that’s what happened to “Civil War”. Also it was only the 2nd Carnage symboite that was destroyed the original was reabsorbed by Venom and Kasady is still alive.

Captain Spidey I agree that carnage isnt the best choice. But first off they chose alot of characters that didnt have anything to do with “civil war” so that they still had the key characters to fill in as the npcs like she-hulk, patriot, hercules etc. Which sorta makes sense and plus Im betting alot of players havent read the civil war like you and i have so whoever VV puts into this game doesnt really matter to alot of players as long as they’re fun and they are popular characters. Gambit is very popular and as far as I know didnt have much to do with civil war. And at this point they are making characters for people to download at 4.99 a pop. but I do agree with you man

I agree with you that there are some characters in the Marvel U that are waaaay overrated, but almost every single marvel comics fan has thought in some point -CARNAGE/VENOM IS GREEEEEEEAAAATTTT!!!- You can’t argue with that actually, the Maximum Carnage storyline was really cool in my own opinion and venom wasnt introduced in the spider-man 3 movie just for nothing, THE GUY IS HAVING HIS OWN FREAKING MOVIE!! and to end this whole charade, there are several characters in the game like Jean Grey, Gambit, Hulk and the REAL Thor that were even dead, dissapeared or escaping while the civil war was in process but were placed in the game just for the fans and comic book readers like us

He has not been added yet, there will be a pack with carange,a nd i’m guessing 3 to 4 other characters it will most likely be $4.99 for the XBL points that you need to download this pack, and you will most likely need to download it to play with other player who have downloaded it.

Meh character to me. Although he DOES look very nice. I really, really, REALLY, REALLY REEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLY wish the 90’s decade of comics would just STAY forgotten.
I’m still going to get him, but I hope the rest of the DLC makes up for his inclusion. I’m not terribly optimistic that it will. I can only hope this is only the FIRST of at least three 5 packs of characters.

I’m pretty stoked to finally be able to play as Carnage in a game. He’s only been featured in a few Spider-Man games as a boss character but I don’t think there was ever a game that allowed people to play as him. I do hope they add at least Cable and War Machine from the NPCs. I’ve been a fan of them both since Marvel vs Capcom 2, and to play as them in an action/rpg would be awesome.

There was a game that allowed you to play as Carnage before. It was called Maximum Carnage for the SNES. It was a really fun game but at the same time a very HARD game for the fact that there were no saves in those days. The game was prob before your time if you don’t remember it but it was pretty good game for the SNES.

Out of the two symbiotes, I find Carnage a more terrifying opponent than Venom. Granted Venom’s bulky and beastly, but Carnage is a serial killer- he’s just downright bat sh** crazy. Also the fact he could detach and morph his own symbiote into various bladed objects; Venom wished he could do that.
I’m sorry, but it’s kind of clear who’s the better of the symbiote characters in MUA2.

Don’t get the whole love for the villains thing and Carnage is the worst of the lot. A psycho serial killer. Hey kids let’s go play psycho serial killer Carnage, here is a great example of how you should live your life kill lots of innocent people, hey he will be fun to play, not! They have the opportunity to add some real heroes into the game and instead we get Carnage the pyscho killer. Even though I despise Venom at least he played a role in CW. I take it you were one of many who bitched when Nanite Nick Fury was the secret reveal? You need to be more open when it comes to character choices. If you make the DLC roster characters that are iconic and recognizable, it makes them less interesting IMO because you know who they are and what they can do.
VV is doing well in digging into Marvel’s archives and bringing in character that this generation’s fans haven’t heard or or vaguely recognize. This spices up the roster even more.
Besides, like the other Fury haters, you’re a hypocrite; you’ll get the DLC anyway because you can’t help it. You most likely got the game or will get the game by the time you posted this. So next time you find a DLC choice “insulting” or “the final nail in the coffin”, do us a favor and keep quiet. Spread the word to your allies here while you’re at it.

Most people I’ve talked to thought Civil War was a trash story line and prefer the spin that MUA 2 placed on it. Besides Civil War only encompasses 1 of the 3 acts in the game as it is. Also this was well before the Disney/Marvel thing occured.

Im a Carnage fan and all don’t get me wrong, but it just seems odd to have him on a team....he’s insane and doesn’t care about helping anyone, last time I checked serial killers who are sociopaths will kill anyone & everyone if they so desire....and Carnage is both a sociopath and a serial killer, in the comics, Maximum Carnage, & Seperation Anxiety games he would kill anyone who got in his way unless they wanted to kill people along with him, like Shriek, Carrion, Doppleganger, & Demogoblin fighting along side him. Hopefully VV will explain in game why he helps out all of a sudden and tries to go all goody guy. Maybe next game he can be a turn coat that would be a good way to set us up

Doubtful as the N-Space console versions those consoles aren’t really known for DLC. So I wouldn’t expect to see any DLC except on the 360/PS3.

I really really hope all the DLC is seperated =*( Cause I really really don’t want to pay for Carnage just to get the other 4. Hmm, this is a bigger disappointment than Jean Grey >.<
Hope the remaining 4 are much cooler than this...thing.

how didn’t you like iron man? his rocket punch and uni-beam are awesome and his other 2 attacks while aren’t very exciting are still incredibly usful.
I was very pleased with the characters made so far like venom deadpool iron man spider-man gambit juggernaut iceman and pencance and can’t wait to see how carnage will operate. I don’t like how he sounds so close to venom though....

Seein’ some love, but also a lot of hate for Carnage. People, you NEED to throw in some curve balls and obscurities into the mix… it makes things interesting! I personally can’t stand front runner characters (I was never particularly a huge fan of Spider-Man or Wolverine) and always gravitated towards the more odd ball characters… So they get an A+ for including Carnage, in my book!
Now if they can also include Slapstick as one of the other 5 DLC characters, not only would I be pleased but the hardcore fans would be even more pissed… perfect scenario!

To all those that are going on about the charcters personaltiy and how he doesnt play well with others, its a freaking game. And so what if he wasnt a part of the civil war story line. Again just a game. I say put the whole freaking Marvel Univers in as playable charcters and let us all play our own dream teams. Give me the viloent SOBs Carnage, Moonknight, Punshier. Or heck lets give the new kids a chance young averngers runaways.

2. I love how Vanseth commented on his “two favorite attacks”. This, because there are only 4 per character. Glad you like half of your wimpy power roster.
3. I… Don’t get the big-head thing. Watching that was like taking one of my favorite comic-based maniacs and putting them into an anime. That’s… just weird. More claws and axes, plz, less creepy/dumb bite moves.

Well since Carnage came out i just thought maybe that none of the NPC’s will be a DLC just for a thought. Because i might be 100% wrong but Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (1) had DLC that mostly had special dialouge with other players/NPCs and Carnage has no relation to any villians/NPC’s so ya. but i coulda miss out something so don’t hate me im just thinking. leave comments about what will i be wrong about THX!!

There could very well be more down the road; hell, considering it was what, a YEAR before they released the DLC characters for MUA1? Here, it’s only been about a month and ALREADY we’re seeing one of the gnarliest DLC’s ever to be. They know quite well we’ll be itchin’ for more, so let’s just see how it goes.
