Of Course You Realize, This Means War Now that the cat is officially out of the bag regarding Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2’s connection to the blockbuster Marvel Comics events Secret War and Civil War, it’s great to be able to answer some of the burning questions about the game’s story that have inevitably followed. And as the Lead Writer, I’m in a pretty good position to do just that. So here are some answers to what we believe will be the first round of frequently asked questions on Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2’s story elements.
Is Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 an exact retelling of Secret War and Civil War from the comics?
While we have a huge amount of respect and reverence for the source material, the needs of a videogame are different from the needs of a massive comic book crossover event. So, no, it’s not an exact retelling. We think of our version of this story as a kind of “What If...?” scenario, in which some scenes from the comics are almost exactly reproduced, other scenarios are included but modified, and in still other areas our story goes into completely new directions.Our main priority at all times is to make the best possible game, and sometimes that goal can clash with a strict adherence to the comics stories, since they were of course designed for a different medium.
Do I need to have read the comics in order to understand the Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 story?
No, our story is self-contained and should be fully enjoyable by anyone who pops the game into their system. Some familiarity with the Marvel characters is of course helpful, but given the success of the Marvel movie franchises we don’t expect many players to have zero knowledge of characters such as Spider-Man, Iron Man or the X-Men.That said, players who have read the comics will find all kinds of references and allusions to that material, which we hope they’ll get a kick out of.
Since I get to choose which side of the Civil War I want to fight for, does that mean I immediately lose half of the playable characters?
Nope! While choosing a side in the Civil War does lock you away from a few characters who are inextricably associated with one side or the other, the vast majority of the playable characters will “come with you” no matter which side you choose.Again, this is a good example of gameplay trumping exact duplication of the comics material, as taking away so many roster choices would certainly reduce the player’s enjoyment of the experience.
Plus, allowing most characters to choose either side gives us writers fun things to do, like figuring out what reasons Wolverine might have for going Pro-Reg!
Are the comics writers involved in the development of Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2?
While we do have comics writers involved (myself included), our strong desire has consistently been to devote a full-time, on-site narrative team to the project.We have worked closely with Marvel throughout production, gaining valuable insight and input from their creative staff. Additionally, the source material is so rich, we feel that the contributions of Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Millar (and others) will be more than apparent to everyone who plays the game and is familiar with their comics work.
Dedication to full-time, on-site writing and narrative design has reaped many benefits for us, especially in the area of tightly integrated storytelling and gameplay elements.
What are the biggest differences/changes between the narrative elements of Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance ?
In large part due to the nature of the source material, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 has adopted a darker narrative tone than that of the previous game. The Marvel heroes are in conflict with each other over complex and timely issues, and things aren’t as clear-cut or simple as you might expect from a Super Hero game. Moral shades of gray are explored, and players will experience repercussions from their Civil War choice throughout the game.There are many other smaller narrative additions and modifications that will become apparent either closer to or at the game’s release. But Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2’s darker, more ominous tone is probably the most obvious storytelling difference that will jump out at players.

I hope that in this new MUA the foes you fight not to be so easy to defeat. I mean, in the first MUA for example: To defeat Arcade you have to jump on his robots head and press the buttons shown. Doctor Doom, you have to jump on him (after defeating the F4)and then finally you can defeat him the old-fashioned-favorited way. So in conclussion, in the game i would like to fight with powers,claws, punches or anything else my foes and in the end , if you’d like to, defeat them with a finishing move (like in SW: The Force Unleashed).

It sure would be nice if they didn’t omit decent characters like Hawkeye wouldn’t it. Not to mention that any dungeon crawler worth its salt should include an archer. I’m also all for a playable Black Widow!
There were some terrible choices in the last game, but I’m kind of hoping that the secret/civil war story line will keep things on track this time around.

it could be corny with effort, kind of like taking it seriously out of respect of the source material, and letting the corniness come through naturally. it was so forced in mua1 tho, alsomst as if they were trying to make it funnier by going over-the-top cornball. I found it borderline offensive in how bad it was, and either skipped the dialogue because of it or turned the volume off.

nope. nightcrawler or jean died, depending on who you chose in mephisto’s realm. but hulk only made a cameo as bruce banner. unless you had the DLC for 360 or gold edition. cause he was playble in that.

Glad to see you’re using some great story material. I’ve been a big fan of these games since x-men legends and i’m glad to see you’re still holding to a strong storyline. So many games have gone to using very little story and just replacing it with online game play. Keep up the good work and give the story line plenty of play time.

Question (and long-winded clarification): Can we perhaps expect a subtler take on the dialogue in MUA2? In the previous games, that is the X-Men Legends and MUA1, it always seemed to me that the big pitfall was the dialogue. I don’t mean to be at all disrespectful to those who worked on those games, but it always seemed that either the written dialogue was clunky and awkward, or that, though the written words were actually quite clever, the vocal delivery was over-the-top and stilted… so no matter what happened, I was constantly being pulled out of the story and cringing a little. With this game, though, and your involvement in both the writing and the voice recording, Mr. Skolnick, it sounds like these elements are really being closely attended this time! Seeing the care that’s obviously being put into the storytelling in MUA2 is making me very optimistic.

i dont know what to realy expect, but one things for shore, i think that carnage should tie in some how in the story plot and as an intaractible caricter. such as having the synbiotes max power to grow over the playing area as “MAXIMUM CARNAGE”. as i siad be for that spidermans most powerful sutes would be the “spider carnage” sute. also if you have venom and carnage on the same team, then a max power shot would that they would bond together in the story and call down all of the other well known comic book symbiotes from MARVLE and have them as a secret unlock caricters to be a skin on a caricter like wolverine and give all of them a choise to accept the synbiote for good or for eviel. sary for the mis spelled words and all .

I am so looking forward to this game! Everything seems to be highly “respectful” of the Marvel Universe and those characters created within it as well as the “civil war” and “Secret war” storyline . We all have favorite characters that we will all be getting hold of as sson as possible (Hawkeye, Cap and Iron Man being mine but it is causing conflict as to what side to take!) and with all the films that are being created in the next few years the excitement for avid Marvel fans just seems to be increasing! (IronMan 2, Spiderman 4, Thor, Captain America and the so can’t wait for Avengers!) One thing that i didn’t realise is that this will also include the Secret Wars saga but that is neither here or there, the basic fact that this game is being crafted so carefully just adds to the excitement i believe that we all feel in just being able to discuss the possibilities that this game can create. My only concern would be the varients in the game for the different platforms and how that would affect the enjoyability between say an XBOX and a PSP. Will certain charaters be available on the PSP say such as Hawkeye, Black Widow and Ronin from MUA1? I know that these were available with a “Patch” for the 360 but will that sort of option be available for MUA2 or will it just be 1 set of characters available for all?
