Unstoppable: The Making Of Juggernaut Bryan Shutt, Art Director, hopes you enjoy playing Juggernaut as much as he enjoyed helping to create him.
When translating character designs, there are a couple things to keep in mind. First, since this is a game, not a comic, it’s all about making the Marvel characters instantly recognizable from “game camera” distance. After that, our next goal is to blow away the player with lots of attention to detail. They look great and really pop in places like the roster menus, cut scenes, and conversations. When you have the world’s largest army of heroes on screen, you need to stand out in a crowd - which is pretty easy for someone like the Juggernaut.
My main goal with Juggernaut was to make him look like a mobile wrecking ball. From his gargantuan muscle mass to the impenetrable components of his costume, everything about him needed to feel solid and heavy.
At first glance, our Juggernaut stays fairly true to the comics, but you’ll notice that we made a few tweaks here and there. One thing I wanted to do was give him the ability to turn his head (poor guy probably falls for that sneaky tap-on-the-shoulder trick every time). So we broke up his massive dome into a ball-and-socket design that allows the inner helmet to swivel inside a larger collar. I then wanted to secure the whole contraption to his suit in a way that felt believable, so we bolted it to heavy duty cross straps on his chest and back. In the comics the helmet tends to look mysteriously fused into his costume, or in some cases, like it’s just resting on his shoulders. In our version the helmet’s anchor straps fit snuggly around Juggernaut’s pecs and shoulder blades. I think it adds a nice touch visually, while still staying true to the existing design.
In addition to those embellishments, we also gave him some beefy, metal shoulder plates which you typically don’t see in the comics. Since at times we have an angled, top-down game camera, you may be looking at your character’s shoulders; the plates help make Juggernaut readily identifiable no matter what’s happening on the battlefield. Adding that armor also increased his mass on screen, making him appear even more formidable than usual. Extra big gauntlets round out this look, and we matched those with hefty boots to keep him from looking too top heavy.
For the costume’s materials, we didn’t stray very far from Juggernaut’s classic look. His armor still consists of that trademark brownish-red with all the trimmings, but I wasn’t quite sure how to convey “mystical materials from the Crimson Cosmos”. Thankfully, Marvel was kind enough to send us some reference samples. Wouldn’t cha know, the stuff looked strikingly similar to leather and metal! Actually, I had a lot of fun looking up reference materials for the costume. I spent a lot of time thinking about Juggernaut’s helmet, and I kept coming back to pictures of ammunition. My biggest focus was examining the way various rounds fit into their shell casings; I loved the idea that the domed head was basically a gigantic copper bullet. Ultimately I decided to use a low luster metal with a little surface wear-and-tear for variety. This came from the assumption that Juggernaut’s hit his noggin quite a few times over the years, so his costume has that “lived in” look.
As far as design revisions, there weren’t many. The first few designs of the helmet were a little too busy for Marvel, so they asked us to simplify them. In hindsight I’m glad they did; looking at those initial comps, it was definitely the right choice. The only other change we made was to increase his overall size. Once we got Juggernaut’s optimized character model in the game, he just didn’t look big enough. Hulk’s a big guy, but he shouldn’t make the Juggernaut look puny! So we just kept tweaking the scale until it felt right.
All our little touches helped a lot – just from looking at the concept art, you get the sense for how powerful this character is. But it’s not until you see him running around in game, punching and smashing, that you can fully appreciate his potential for destruction. To that end, the animators, Powers team, and Fusion team did a fantastic job. Big ups to Audio as well - there’s nothing more satisfying than the booming sounds of a charging Juggernaut filling your ears while demolishing everything in your path.
So that’s it on the Juggernaut. I hope you enjoy playing him as much as I enjoyed helping to create him.

Thanks for this Blog about designing MUA2’s Juggernaut. I’m still not sold on the idea, but I’m willing to give you the benefit of the doubt until I’ve seen video, or gameplay. I’ve been impressed with the game as a whole so far, and am excited to see the rest of the roster, and to start getting into the meat of what the game is like, and other details we’ll get to see later on. wolverine is strictly scrapper/pointman type(which i consider different than a tank...techincally deadpool falls in this category as well) and neh thor is pretty much the equivlant of superman in the marvel universe....he freakin does it all(range,tank,scrapper). but i do agree we need some more “power-range users”.

It depends on your definition of a tank. According to Newslad he is more like a train than a tank. They are working really hard to make each character unique and that will be borne out in the gameplay.

Excellent post News Lad. For the record, I’d love to see more of these types of posts, that get into a bit more of the gameplay side of characters. General development, costumes / models, bios, they’re all great. I appreciate them.
But getting a bit more description about gameplay and how each individual plays, their powers (in-game powers), that’s the real “meat” of a character, IMO. And there unfortunately hasn’t been a great deal of details on the gameplay side of the characters.
I’d love to hear about some of the returning characters even, as far as how each character will play. Assuming they aren’t all going to remain exactly as the original.

I really don’t get all the anger over Juggernaut being playable. I think he was one of Marvel’s great villains and while yes he is another tank the developers seem to be making a great effort to make every character unique and distinctive in their style of play.

Very AWESOME look! I have no prob with the outfit change, I think Juggernaut has gone through what about 5 costumes through his life? Anyways, I would like to see the classic, crimson costume, the newer black costume and his ultimate outfit as unlockable costumes.

Looks like I’m late weighing in on this one, but I was hoping Juggernaut would be in this one to make the best heavyweights in the Marvel universe be accounted for, now all we need is Colossus. Of course I do want to see Jean, Cyclops, Psylocke, Nightcrawler, Beast, Archangel, Ice Man, Gambit and Rogue. But I guess this isn’t an X-Men game, right? (lol). Of course the best out of that group should be expected.
I found out some disturbing news about the playability of Juggernaut on Marvel’s website and that’s that he’s only available to be played by pre-ordering the game from Gamestop. I have to say that I’m not pleased with this news. But in light of the competition between retailers this was to be expected when the same was done with Wolverine. But still, it ain’t cool. The saga continues....(lol)

Although Juggy is thought of as an X-Man character, he has been in a lot of other Marvel characters books. Hopefully his power is on the same level as the Hulk in this game. I think he looks great and I’m so glad he can turn his head now. I have always been a Juggy fan and that was one of his few flaws. I’m an X-Men fan no doubt, still wanting to see Archangel and all, but I still want more characters from everywhere!

Oh yeah, I feel the argument for all these heavyweights like Luke Cage, Hulk, The Thing and now Juggernaut being characters that have the same or similar abilities. Even so, I still wanna’ see Colossus in it just to make it complete (lol). But if they do this, hopefully they are able to give variety to their abilities to keep it interesting.
I already see how difficult making a game like this can be, between what the fans of the Marvel universe wants and what the developers see should be the end product. But hopefully it all works out for the best for all of us. And I wouldn’t mind seeing Ghost Rider back using his bike in some kind of way...hint, hint. (lol)

Amazing! I hope that all characters are made like this. By that I mean, take your time to make everyone look good and make them unique on how they play. Spider-man for instance should be hard to hit.. While everyone knows Juggy can just rip through countless enemies and that’s how it should be.

Nicely done. Good job on making a good looking tank.
The Thing got a bit dull and Venom is just laughable as a tank in Marvel Alliance. Glad to see a much buffer and more tyrannical tank-style character. Maybe give Hulk a run for his money.

Well yeah actually it does, sure they can have 2 costumes be old beast and 2 be kitty beast, perhaps one could wear a lab coat or spandex pants while the other wears undies, but usually one costume is a lot better than the others. Take for instance the Iron Man costume in MUA, personally I thought that the Ultimate Costume was the best stat wise but I liked the Classic Costume the best, so I had to sacrifice some bonuses to get the appearance I liked, which really didn’t matter in the end seeing as how Iron Man is a straight up baller. But thats the thing with Beast, he isn’t nearly as baller as Tony is so having Kitty Beast be his worst costume could really mess him up

and how can Jean Lame be the most intense if she’s never had a ongoing series to herself, I guess you could consider the Dark Phoenix saga a series but it wasn’t very long.

first off, to say that jean grey isnt one of the most intense characters is freakin rediculous dude. she may not be one of my favorite characters but before she died in the comics she was arguably one of the most powerful beings on the planet(if not galaxy). The strongest telekinetic on the planet and second strongest telepath(xavier being the first) and o ya, the power of the freaking phoniex . I personally feel like jean grey/phoenix(and no im not going to argue schemantics with you as to which ones which, i think we all get what everyone means when they refer to each/both) probably had the power to single handely take out the hulk at his strongest or at least put up a hell of a fight. having her in the game with nex gen graphics...i mean comon surely you can agree that a huge literal firebird could look pretty awesome in a game like this(not to mention power fusions).

Being able to play as Namor would be dirty, he’s a straight up gangster, not really though… he is really the ruler of atlantis and half-atlantean/ half human, but still he’s a pretty interesting character to read when they release something about him (which is only once every few years sadly).
I also hope the bring back Moon Knight and Black Panther, haven’t seen anything about them yet and they were usually part of my team. (Martial Artists +15 striking)
I would also would be interested in seeing characters like Ant-Man (Hank Pym because he’s such an arrogant jerk), Howard the Duck (because he is a duck that talks named Howard + he is pretty powerful according to marvel.com), Wasp (very similar to Ant-Man except with a better haircut and not a dude and able to fly and shoot energy out of her hands), and perhaps even Captain Marvel (even though he isn’t human he is a baller even though he was a Skrull… a skrull who killed evil skrulls to save the earth mind you… he loves you)

Namor seems to be an a-hole in comics like the Illuminati, and who is on that team? A bunch of elitist f*cks, Tony Stark (caused the deaths of Cap and Janet van Dyne), Reed Richards (sided with Tony instead of his wife and two best friends, basically Tony’s butt boy), Charles Xavier (he likes Cyclops… nuff said), Stephen Strange (Marvel’s oh sh*t button), and Blackagar Boltagon (he doesn’t even talk...)
And if you have read the Submariner comic series from 2006, I think it was an initiative series, then you should know that Namor isn’t a chump when he is on land (only when he is dehydrated… but then again who isn’t) He dominates Venom, Wolverine, and others, and saves his entire civilization from being taken over by shield.
If Cap was such a great leader he wouldn’t have gotten himself caught and he would have had to try to convince Tony, who by the way was his best friend, that supporting the passing of the registration act was a bad idea but instead he just told him he was stupid and they started fighting. The only reason people followed Cap was because he could back up the stupid stuff he said with his bravery. I mean honestly, have you actually thought about some of the stuff he says. “Bucky! What are you doing? This is a fellow soldier! A fellow patriot! And I will not tolerate this kind of dissension in my ranks! From anyone!” No one was ever motivated by that garbage, they all thought wow what a lame dude.
Plus, Invisible Woman has the hots for Namor.

Namor doesn’t throw water balls like Mermaid Man.
For one he can fly via his wingies on his ankles.
He has the strength of one thousand surface men (yes on land not just in the water).
He has electrical powers.
He has telepathic control over marine life (but that won’t really come in handy unless they are on a boat or something like that).
And aside from the whole strength thing he is also very fast, very agile, and very durable.
He, like a good cheese, ages well.
So for his super powers he could have a powerful punch like almost every other character had (Like Cap’s shield bash, Black Panthers Claw Slash, Iron Man’s Rocket Uppercut, et cetera)
He could have some move involving flight. Perhaps, he could grab them fly up and slam them. Or he could tackle them into a wall or something.
Sometimes he carries a knife, he’s used it to cut diver’s hoses. So he could stab or slash his enemies.
I don’t really know much about fusions or how they work. But if I had to think of something he could summon a big ol’ shark and then have the Human Torch set it on fire so the enemy would get bit in half and set afire (like the shark). Or he could pick up Jugs, fly up real high, and then drops Jugs on the enemy (Jugs is not only unstoppable but basically invincible, or he could drop the hulk whichever you prefer… I only said Jugs because this is his forum :D)

The Thing had four attack moves in the last game.
Uppercut, Clap, charge, and ground smash.
Namor could have Uppercut (or some variation of a punching move), flying charge/tackle, a knife/stabbing move, a pickup and drop move (involving flight), an electricity shooting/zapping/taser type move, his defensive/ buff moves could include evasion/dodge moves, a hydration move that empowered him for a certain amount of time (he gets really deadly just after he has been in water [see the comic where he fights wolverine at the X-Mansion])
I really don’t see what you are trying to get at, and if you are trying to get at anything you aren’t doing a very good job :/

i think he would need more original moves, cause something like flight taackle sounds like something you can do by pressing the heavy attack butten in mid air it doesn’t sound like a super power type move, remember Silver Surfer had it that way in the first game, and as for pickup and drop that can be similar to what Hulk and Colossus do when they pick up an enimy not a super power attack

Ok so its ok for Hulk, the Thing, Colossus, Juggernaut, and Luke Cage to have melee moves revolving around being super strong but it isn’t ok for namor? I don’t know, that jut confuses me.
And isn’t an electrically oriented attack pretty unique. I’m not talking lighting like Storm or Thor, more like a zap like Beak(who I hope to god isn’t in the game) would do.
Plus, the knife and buff moves I mentioned. He also likes to fly/swim through ships, planes, cargo vessels, and wear a really cool speedo.

that’s not what i said, i was only refering to Hulk and Colossus, i have nothing against melee attacks having to be super power attacks, most characters have itn what i was trying to say is grabbing and dropping doesn’t sound like a super power move, yeah i know Dr. Strange and Magneto had some grapple moves for their super power moves but at least they used their powers to hold the enimies, Namor can’t due that he’d have to use his bare hands to grab the enemy that kind of thing shouldn’t be a super power attack, it would be a waste to put it as one

listen, just because Namor isn’t a tank character doesn’t mean he can have the capabilities of one, this kinda thing happens all the time in video games, take super smash bros brawl for example Wolf is considered one of the heavy characters in the game, although he doesn’t look like he would be, but he has the capabilities of a heavy character

agreed i suppose, but i always considered wolf a “heavy” character not because he was a “big” character, but because he literally falls extremely fast in the game lol. And hence my designation of namor as more of a “striker” character(like wolvie or dp, because they as well use melee special attacks often as well, but still remain of a smaller frame). BUT i guess i was mainly trying to keep continunity sake(ex:spider-man can lift heavy stuff like namor, but he’s not a “tank” character,hence “striker” designation). also, im not big fan of cap’s speeches either, but ulitmatey my argument was more for cap being a better leader than namor....annnd done lol

at the rate of these guys suddenly making the heroes look more badass then they do in the comics i can’t imagine how awsome Punisher or Gambit would look if they get confermed, something’s telling me Gambit will be playable cause like during the time of the first MUA the developes only put Ghost Rider because the game came out close to the release of the Ghost Rider movie same goes for Silver Surfer that follows in from the second Fantastic 4 movie and since X-Men Origens Wolverine came out and Gambit was in it, then we gotta pretty high chance of having him in the game, same goes for the Punisher with the Punisher warzone movie

Just great another waste of a character spot… Juggernaunt really has no ties to anyone, yes he was briefly an x-men, but it was just that- briefly. Juggernaunts skills are so similar to Hulk and the Thing that you basically have 3 characters with the same move sets and abilities. Please, lets see more of an effort to diversify the roster. If you wanted to put an X character on that has a lot of popularity, is coming off having a movie and is a diversified character with both melee and energy moves with both range and close range attacks my suggestion would have been Gambit since those reasons seem to be what motivated the selection of deadpool. Please, for the love of god, do a better job of putting new powers in and actually allow the play to be different.

You can pre-order through Gamestop, and you can have it shipped to you or to the closest Gamestop store in your area. What is nice about having it shipped to the store is there are no shipping charges and you can pick it up right when they open whereas if it is shipped to your house it might not arrive tell the afternoon.

So far I am happy with the heros involved with UA2, but I want Gambit in this game. Gambit has yet to be in a next gen video game, his time has come. I know I’m not alone here, all gambit fans unite and voice your demand for him to be in Ultimate Alliance 2. This game is referred to as the greatest line up of the marvel universe, not true unless Gambit is in there. I would say Namor also, but that would only be cool if there was an underwater level for him to shine.

Hey Devs are there anyway you can make Juggernaut true to his scale in the Official Marvle.com site it states that The savage version of hulk which is at his largest is 8’ 1400lbs but Juggernaut is a staggering 9’5” tall 1900lbs which makes the Unstoppable Juggernaut most certainly taller and heavier than the emrald giant I pre ordered the game and I hope he is true to Marvels official scale.

The “spirit of the character” I was referring to is the essence of the character that is left when you take away the visuals, like if you were to read a story about the character, you’d get the same sense of them as when the spirit is properly captured in the visual design.

sorry but I dont think luke cage who by his card rating and rpg stats for marvels pencil and paper games he is listed as only slightly stronger then spider man and in some cases like in marvel super hero adventure game is shown as having a 13 to spidey’s 14 in strength rating,where as thing had an 18 jugs a 19 and hulk 20 when calm +1 each exchange up to a strength of 30 which was galactus and celestial level strength thor wonderman and herculese all sported 19’s and namor a 17what I am saying is he is as strong as spidey but with bullet proof skin that can only be damaged by substances like adamantium coated claws blades or bullets that is the only thing that would make him a tank he is not in those other guys league my team on MUA 1 was Thor Iron Man Ms Marvel and Silver Surfer the Power Platoon config they work quite well and a re pretty much over kill combined since they are all ranged flying tanks and crowd control,just wondering why you guys consider him comparable to hulk juggs and thing when he is no stronger then spidey?

Yeah I like this Juggernaut its a great twist on his classic outfit and it is more believable I still like the old giant magically fused helmet look better he seemed more unstoppable this one sorta reminds me of a rusty power suit or something it still looks great though dont get me wrong and I cant wait to play as the unstoppable Juggernaut..maybe the old look will be an alt costume(crosses fingers)

Well done Bryan! Juggernaut is one of my favorite Marvel characters and he looks awesome in the game! The helmet design is excellent and I can’t wait to play him in game!

Looks like I WILL have to settle for this costume now that his alt has been revealed as the worst costume ever.

His Alternate is sadly his Ultimate incarnation. A few people are digging on it, but I figure that plenty of people are into bondage or like inferior versions of characters.
