Our newest revealed characters are Venom and Green Goblin. There’s a lot to say about this dastardly duo, so we’ve got a mega-sized, multi-participant Developer Q&A for you. Read on!
As a human bonded with an alien symbiote, Venom’s obviously not a regular character – did this present any problems when animating him?
Adam Olshan, Senior Animator:
Yes, but they weren’t so much problems as challenges. The heroes and villains in MUA2 run the gamut of size and proportion, many demanding a different approach to animation. Venom is so large on top, with hulking shoulders and long arms. His legs aren’t long in comparison, so sometimes even balancing his poses was a challenge. But the animation team was hungry to work on him, and we put in a lot of time to figure things out and make him awesome.
How do you deal with a character who has to be big and bulky, but also fast and lethal?
Venom’s definitely a paradox in that regard. Oddly enough, I often think of Spider-Man the same way: he’s springy, agile, fast… but he can hurl a car at you. The animation team often referenced the animal kingdom for inspiration. Gorillas always came to mind when looking at Venom’s form, but jungle cats seemed to inspire me the most. Tigers, leopards… these are large, heavy beasts that still move at incredible speeds and attack quicker than you can blink. We tried to tailor his movements in such a way that evoked those types of lethal behaviors. Venom’s motion had to maintain that mass, while still being smooth, almost exhibiting grace. Where Thing might hurl his body at an opponent or smash the ground, Venom lunges and pounces. Where Thing might clobber some poor sap, Venom will swipe and claw.
Did Venom’s role in the Thunderbolts comics influence you guys?
The team always looks to the comics for visual reference. The panels generally contain some of the most dynamic poses you’ll ever see, and posing is the key to the whole deal. As for character direction, “crazy” makes for “interesting” animation. Gargan’s struggle with the symbiote leads to more than a few insane outbursts, and that’s what we drew upon for his character.
Visually speaking, the “Gargan” Venom is such an interesting figure, and our concept artists and modelers really did a phenomenal job bringing him to life. As for the animators, a number of us had the same initial reaction: “So… Venom blinks now. Neat!”
Were there any overriding themes for Venom that you wanted to get across?
“Vicious, lethal animal.” Once the team found a good solid reference point for Venom’s movement, we always found ourselves referring to him using at least one of those words.
Got any powers or fusions you want to talk about?
Venom’s powers and fusions are some of my favorite in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2. The Powers team took a great deal of time to make Venom incredibly fun to play, and the FX team really made Venom’s skin and tendrils come to life.
As for my favorite power… it’s probably the most basic power he has, and I’m not supposed to give too much away, but I’m partial to one with his tongue. It was the first power the team thought of working on: it’s signature Venom. And it also segues nicely into the next question…
Going to ask you the question about crazy animation bugs again. Anything weird happen?
Man, that tongue seemed to develop a mind of its own more than a few times. Early on, I was experimenting with ways to control the movement of the tongue during different animations. Once I got the tongue animating, I couldn’t seem to turn the thing off. Venom was tearing around a level with his tongue just going absolutely nuts, flopping back and forth, all over.
Even recently we had an issue in which his tongue animation miscued during a power. We couldn’t even tell what Venom was doing. All we saw was this giant pink tongue flailing all over the place. It was a lot like the situation with the Glider that wouldn’t stop following Green Goblin. Goes to show, if you put playable Super Villains in your game, they’re not likely to follow all the rules.
Neat. Let’s get back to Fusions for a bit...
Justin Heisler, Fusion Designer
Mostly, Venom’s fusions are based around his symbiote suit and the brute strength it gives him. Effectively we treat him as a hybrid of Spider-Man and the Hulk. He uses his suit to fling himself around; the massive impacts can cause localized earthquakes in his wake. He can extrude tendrils, grasping a multitude of enemies by their throats and pulling them all to their doom. Working with his partners, he can rain down huge objects upon unsuspecting foes, smashing them and leaving a large pile of destruction behind.
OK, last question: what did the Art team do to capture Venom’s look?
[this question got a longer (and awesomer) answer than I was expecting]

Once we knew we were doing the Gargan version of Venom we got right to work. As usual I had Dave Phillips (concept artist) on point creating “roughs” (what we call the initial designs for the character). He started focusing on visual differences between the two Marvel Venoms and highlighting what made the Gargan version unique.
Right away you’ll notice that Gargan-Venom actually has eyeballs in sockets in addition to those flat, white markings across his head. This tends to make him feel more humanoid. The Brock-Venom has no point of focus for his eyes and therefore feels more alien. It reminds me of that creepy feeling you get looking at arthropods or other creatures with compound eyes. I’ll leave it up to the fans to debate over which is actually creepier.
Our main source of comic inspiration was Leinil Yu’s Venom variant cover to Thunderbolts #110 . His Venom had the monster-sized physique we were looking for.

We also liked the mass of squiggly veins and tendons that appear all over his body, eventually converging around his neck and head. We wanted to capture that on the model, and luckily with the use of normal maps, we can now afford to add this kind of detail without blowing our graphics budgets.
We wanted the white markings to have a slightly “sunken in” look on the black body, almost as if it had been branded into his skin. This produces a distinct edge that separates the two and helps to accentuate the spider emblem on his chest and back. Also we made Gargan-Venom’s skin more textural overall. By that I mean it has a rougher, matte appearance whereas the Brock-Venom has more of a smooth, slick surface.
Dave and I also really liked some of the versions of Venom’s mouth where his teeth were directly embedded into his face rather than having lips and a gum line. Depending upon the artist drawing him you can find instances of both, but we thought it just looked more vicious that way, so that’s how it appears in the game.
Another thing we do is collect a lot of photo reference we refer to as “material callouts”. These images get tagged over the model sheet to help the modelers and texture artists understand the exact look we’re going for. When creating over a hundred characters for a game you don’t always have the luxury of painting every last detail of their costumes, so these material callouts are a good way of filling in the blanks. A fun part of the process is actually scouring the internet for pictures (filters on, please!).
Dave did a great job choosing Venom’s material callouts. Let’s see…shark skin for the white markings, black garden snails for the body, raw meat for the tongue, and fossilized T-Rex talons for his claws. Cool, cool stuff.
For Venom’s eyes we added a hint of a pupil rather than making them look like a blank white cue ball. It somewhat resembles the faint, dark markings on grasshopper eyes (Go look it up right now, it’s neat!).
Lastly, what would Venom be without all of his gooey, stringy tendrils? Well, we’ve got those too. Even just standing around in his idle pose, the effects artists were able to give him animated “feelers” spawning from his body. As mentioned earlier, his tongue is also a formidable weapon in our game, so you’ll be seeing that ugly thing flailing about.
Oh, and he drools.

Venom being stronger than Spider Man never made any sense to me. Brock while a weighlifter did not possess superhuman strength yet Peter did and while he was more powerful with the Symbiote he wasn’t that much stronger. But when the symbiote bonds with Brock all of sudden Brock is stronger than spidey.

I think that it has to do with the symbiote “learning” powers from those which it binds with… Though the “other” (venom’s symbiote) has binded with many others and I haven’t seen expamples of too many other powers besides spideys… and a Scorpian tale at one point, but that was part of the scorpian costume…

But… Why it is stronger and faster then spider-man, I’m not quite sure, in the original comics (#252-about 265) it never mentioned that Pete’s abilities were really enhanced by the costume, did it? I know that later showings of the symbiote (cartoons, etc.) it showed spidey as a stronger faster dude

You’re right. Suit didn’t originally enhance Peter’s strength. If anything, it made him weaker, because it didn’t let him rest.

the thing is, parker never really fully accepted the symbiote. So while it did in fact increase all his powers(strength, speed, ect.) per default, he never fully bonded, therefore never actualizing his full potential with the suit(constantly in flux/struggle with the symbiote due to their conflicting.... subconcious views on how to deal with situations).
Meanwhile, both gargan and brock have always fully accepted the suit in it’s entirety and thought of it as an extension of themselves. THIS is what allows them to be stronger than spider man(on top of what you guys were mentioning earlier about the symbiote ehancing one’s traits). the equivilant for spidey’s case is....like taking steroids and then not working out and laying around instead.
But i will admit this: out of the 3, spidey had the most potential for strength. hence the him being the symbiotes first “choice”.

But enhancing Peter’s abilities was never mentioned in comicbooks. Originally symbiote was just living alien suit. It didn’t have any effect on Spider-Man’s powers.

The part about the tongue reminds me of my problems trying to find a suitable tongue bolton for my Anole mod. One of the ones I tried was huge and very glitchy.

Yeah, Brock was a much better and much more interesting character. Plus I just think he looked cooler. He was Spidy’s arch-nemisis, his villianous counterpart, like Red Skull to Capatain America, or Joker to Batman. He would have been so much better, even if it didn’t really fit in with the story. Still, I have Venom, and even if it is Gargan, I can live with it. He does look awesome

Considering that those characters were not available on every system they can’t rely on downloadable characters to correct mistakes in the release version of the game. Take the lack of Nightcrawler in UA1. As far as I’m aware he was a fan favourite in XML and they left him out of the release version but then had him as downloadable on only some systems. How do you think that made Nightcrawler fans on other systems feel?

I was simple stating that when a game is released across systems then unless the games are intended to be system specific (ie DS utilising touchpad or Wii unique control) then the relevant completed game is before downloadable content. This was by no means a dig at you but a comment on designing practices in general.

That’s not entirely what I was getting at but you do raise a good point. Basically what I mean is that UA1 was initially designed as a PS2/XBOX gen game (someone correct me if I’m wrong) Now the PS2 version had no downloadable characters so basically this is the version which is judged complete. The XBOX had some downloadable characters but was essentially the same game so the XBOX feature needs to be counted as an XBOX bonus but not as a valid point towards the completed game as a whole.
Now back to your GBA point. Very few people expect to get the same game on their portable console. The PSP can handle it to some degree and the DS to a lesser degree but essentially a portable game system will have a different version of the game. This said if the system doesn’t handle a direct ‘port then the design needs to practically be a new game. Many companies pump out their game on all systems to cash in on the title but only put the design work into the higher end systems games which leaves many ‘lesser’ systems with patchwork games which are essentially unplayable. I think the best example which comes to mind was when Rare released Donkey Kong Land for the old B&WGameboy;which used the rendered graphics and animation style of the SuperNES. This meant that as soon as you started moving your character, the whole screen became a mess of blurred motion.

PSP should be able to handle a PS2 game I would think. Like the GBA can handle SuperNES games and the DS can handle N64 games. They should all be practically direct ‘ports. I would imagine the PSP version of UA2 will be similar to UA1 as far as graphics/clarity and such.

Hey, there are only five tanks (Hulk, Thing, Juggernaut, Luke Cage, Venom). Out of 24, that’s not too much. And of course Hulk and Venom will play differently.
And Green Goblin? Waste of a spot? Goblin is basically king of Marvel Universe right now, and even during Civil War, he was important as leader of Thunderbolts. And Thunderbolts fit gloriously in a game about Civil War.

Yes Norman Osborn was around for the civil war and just became head of the thunderbolts, but not really the green goblin, he didnt play that big of a role durring the civil war. ya i remeber the glory days of venom as well back in the day. unfortunately, nowa days the continunity for venom as per comics(present time) is that while he does have powers similar to spider man, apparently they are(and possibly always were?) simply an extension of the suit/symbiote. so whereas spidey would shoot webs, venom just shoots a expendable piece of the suit as “goo”.

The Hobgoblin should show up as an alternate costumes. I could really care less about Menace but there really isn’t too much you can do their for alternate costumes.
There is the new one they have to the game, the really old classic one which would be nice too see, Hobgoblin is simply a must and the forth spot could be filled with Menace, Goblin 2099 which I think is the same from Spider-Man Unlimited, Ulitmate Green Gobin, or even that Goblin Armor for the movie.
I don’t mind what one fills that forth spot or even with but it would be nice to see the Hobgoblin and having the Classic Goblin on a team with the Classic Spider-Man would be a nice pairing.

I don’t like Garagan Venom because I think Eddie Broke is the only Venom and that Marvel made a mistake taking the symbiot away from him. That being said I do liek what you did with this appearence in this game. If there are going to be alternate costumes for Venom I would like to see the classic Venom, I think he was best drawn in the Maximum Carnage arc. Other Venom costumes that would be good to see would be the Spiderman 3 version, Ultimate Venom, or Venom with the head exposed. Thanks for reading!!!

No....ive got to say, as sheer awesome as venom is, Brock-Venom is a million times more awesome. He was the original, and he should have been the only. Gargan is Scorpion, Brock is Venom. I say that if a guy is gonna be bonded to an alien symbiote, he should be slick, glossy, and RETAIN THE SAME PHYSIQUE!!! i never liked how poeple thought of venom as being basically hulk sized!!!...he was big for a guy because eddie brock worked out....maybe the suit adds a bit as it enhances hi muculature...but super powered muscles done have to be big!!!!....Spidey can throw cars and you dont see him built like the hulk...Venom is stronger yeah, but not strong enough to look like the juggernaut in leather

i agree, EA did a great job with that in Marvel Nemisis, yeah everyone in that game had a small moveset but Venom did have a lot of fliping animations, but who knows Activision might do the same in MUA2 yeah they bragged about his size but they didn’t say much about the moveset and he had a Venom like moveset when he was downloadable for MUA1 so anything can happen

Glad to see the inclusion of Venom, but I hope you didn’t stick Ghost Rider’s voice in his mouth again. The two just don’t match. It was horrendous in MUA1. I prefer the voice he had in Marvel Nemesis home console games. Like when he says “You? You don’t stand a chance!”

Brock - basically a good guy but completely fucked up in the head; obsessed with destroying spider-man and in love with a grotesque alien parasite but otherwise moral, righteous and law-abiding. Despite his fanatism, Used the suit in creative, smart ways, to the point of defeating Spider-Man almost every time.
Gargan - dangerous psycopath, formerly the Scorpion, went mad due to the suit that gave him his first villainous identity and powers, when he bonded with the suit he became a complete fairy tale monster that eats people and so on. Uses the suit basically to act as a maneating ogre.

yea...Brock selling the suit was out of character. the people who write the comics CAN do whatever they want. that doesnt mean they always DO respect the integrity of the comics. I also think that Peter revealing himself in the Civil War was out of character. As was becoming a Punisher-wannabe when Aunt May was shot. I’m not saying they DIDN’T happen, I’m saying they SHOULDN’T have.
as much as it pains me to admit it, I truly believe the best thing Marvel can do is retire their old heroes. Have a completely new batch of Spandex-wearing, bad-guy bashing do-gooders. at this point all their doing is ruining the characters for the old fans. Up-and-coming Marvelites don’t care if their characters have 40+ years behind them.
TO MARVEL:Let old-timers keep the integrity of their childhood heroes, stop selling them out for you pocketbooks. We’ve got a lot of old times to catch up on with these guys....I don’t know about other fans...but me personally?....I’m much happier with Spider-Man back-issues than the new stuff. I’ll take the last 400 comics of Spidey over BACK IN BLACK and ONE MORE DAY anytime. New fans...New heroes...simple, no?

I feel kinda bad...im a super Marvel fan (serioulsy my Step-dad has to ban me from discussing comics with my mom at the dinner table sometimes because we talk so much about them) yet here i am tering them down on they’re own sight.
i just can’t stand all the “gritty realism” and “darkness” they try to put in to comics these days. the old heroes should still have the feel they had in the old days. I don’t mind having a darker side to a comic....but i only think it should be there if it’s been there all along

That he chose his own right to anonymity/ independence over his responsibility to the people. That he rejected a law intended to stop a war, and in doing so CAUSED that very war. That he opposed the will of the general public. And more importantly that, by doing so, he took half the MU with him; dozens of heroes that should have been cooperating, helping each other, protcting the people together, instead went to pointless war - to follow him.
And in the end, he DID admit he had been wrong. He was the ONLY hero in the conflict to openly do so. Incidentally, that’s what makes him my hero.

I suppose that if I wanted to play devils advocate i could make strong arguments for both sides. However, I’m Anti. perhaps a super-villain registration act would have been ok, but if a super-hero goes public, he places his family in danger. I do not believe that you should have to place your loved ones in danger so you can look after others. your heroism is not their choice. Super-Heroes arent gonna do anything bad, they’re out to protect the people. then again, I believe I have already expressed a belief that all the old classic heroes should just retire, but Marvel’s raking in the money, so thats not likely to happen.

Ah, but you do not NEED to convince me. I doubted my allegiance for months when the comic series came out. I seriously considered the Anti arguments and mostly agree with them. However, when leaving the realm of nice IDEAS and taking the road of required ACTION, I believe Stark was right.
I don’t know if yoy knew this, but you have basically the same opinion as Stan Lee. He also said it was sad to see his “children” fight each other, and he also said that superheroes did NOT need to register since it was a given they would be responsible with their powers.
However, determining who is a hero and who a villain, who has good intentions and responsibility and who doesn’t, would be harder to put to practice than it sounds. Perhaps we should open a separate thread in the forums to discuss this.
